Carter Pate was appointed Interim Chief Executive Officer of Providence in November 2017. Mr. Pate brings to Providence extensive experience in healthcare, logistics, transportation and government contracting, areas directly aligned with the Company’s operating businesses and end markets. Mr. Pate joined Providence from Carter Pate, LLC, a resource for management and boards of directors seeking expertise and interim C-suite services, where he served as Founder and CEO. From 2011 to 2014, he served as the CEO of one of the largest privately owned passenger transportation contracting firms based in the United States. Prior to that, Mr. Pate spent nearly two decades at PricewaterhouseCoopers, most recently serving as Global & U.S. Managing Partner, Capital Projects, Infrastructure & Government Practice. During his tenure at PwC, Mr. Pate held multiple leadership positions and advised Fortune 500 companies and G-20 governments. He currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors for BioScrip, Inc. and Board Chair of Compensation for Advanced Emissions Solutions, Inc. Author of "The Phoenix Effect" (now in five languages), Mr. Pate was recently named a “Board Governance Fellow” by the National Association of Corporate Directors. Mr. Pate holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Greensboro College and a masters of accounting & information management from the University of Texas at Dallas.
David Shackelton has served as our Chief Financial Officer since 2015, having previously served as Head of Corporate Development for Providence since 2014. Prior to joining Providence, Mr. Shackelton was a private equity investment professional at Mill Road Capital and The Blackstone Group. Before joining Blackstone, Mr. Shackelton worked at the Yale Investments Office, the entity responsible for investing Yale University’s endowment funds. Mr. Shackelton received a bachelor's degree in economics from Yale University and a master of business administration degree from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
Laurence Orton has served as our Corporate Controller and Vice President Finance since 2017. Prior to joining Providence, he was with Chemtura Corporation where he most recently served as Vice President and Chief Accounting Officer. Prior to working at Chemtura, Mr. Orton worked at Avecia Group PLC and Ernst and Young in the United Kingdom. Mr. Orton received a bachelor's degree in industrial economics from the University of Nottingham, U.K. School of Management and Finance and is a member of the Association of Chartered Accountants and the Institute of Chartered Accountants for England and Wales.
William Severance has served as our Chief Accounting Officer since 2016. Prior to joining Providence, Mr. Severance held the Chief Accounting Officer and Controller role at a number of companies, including: the Gilt Groupe, a pioneer in e-commerce in the U.S.; Travelport Worldwide, a global travel commerce platform providing distribution and technology solutions to the travel industry; and IAC/Interactive Corp, a leading media and Internet company. Mr. Severance also worked for 11 years for Ernst and Young in the Atlanta, New York and Hamburg, Germany offices, providing services to a wide range of companies, including American Standard, Coca-Cola Enterprises, Mizuno USA, Mobil Oil, Time Warner Music Group and Staples. Mr. Severance received a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Louisiana State University and is a member of the Georgia Society of CPAs and American Institute of CPAs.
Sophia Tawil has served as our General Counsel, Chief Compliance Officer and Secretary since 2016. Ms. Tawil is responsible for oversight of corporate legal matters, including those relating to the company's growth initiatives, governance and compliance. Prior to joining Providence, she worked at Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP as a Senior Attorney since 2014 and as a Corporate Associate from 2006 to 2014. Prior to that, her experience includes in-house roles, including at USA Networks, Inc., a predecessor to IAC/InterActiveCorp. Ms. Tawil received a bachelor’s degree from Barnard College, Columbia University and a juris doctor degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School.
Matthew Umscheid has served as Senior Vice President of Strategic Services since 2015. Prior to joining Providence, Mr. Umscheid was with Parthenon Capital Partners, where most recently he served as Director of Strategy and Implementation. Mr. Umscheid led multiple value creation projects within healthcare services, including portfolio company strategy and operational improvement, carve outs, merger integration and business intelligence. Mr. Umscheid has served on the boards of Parthenon healthcare services companies as well as an advisor and board observer for multiple financial and business services companies. During 2008 and 2009 Mr. Umscheid served as the interim CEO at AccuData Integrated Marketing, a Parthenon Capital portfolio company, where he led turn-around efforts. Prior to 2007, Mr. Umscheid was Manager and Consultant with L.E.K. Consulting. Mr. Umscheid received a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from University of Notre Dame and a master of business administration from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College.
